Zhongshan Daily—It is learned from Zhongshan Construction Bureau that the Project of Water Supply to Every Village in Zhongshan won 2008 National Habitat Model Prize awarded by Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Construction yesterday. This is one of the three prizes won by Guangdong Province out of 32 nationwide. This time 7 cities in Guangdong are competing for nearly 30 awards.
Prior to National Day in 2007, around 40 residents in 14 out-of-the-way villages including those in Tanzhou Town, Wuguishan Ecological Reserve, Nanlng Town, Shenwan Town were provided with safe drinking water, as the last batch of villagers enjoyed municipal water supply. So far the 10-year Project of Water Supply to Every Village in Zhongshan has been completed successfully, which turns Zhongshan into the first prefecture-level city supplying drinking water to every village.
National Habitat Model Prize is known to be set up in 2000 and awarded once a year. This is a new award presented by Chinese Government with reference to UN-habitat Award, aiming to encourage and promote renovation and construction of habitat environment in cities so as to provide residents with favorable living and working environments regarding environment protection, ecology, atmosphere, water quality, greengage, transportation, etc. This will meet the needs of city dwellers to live a better-off life, and contribute to the modern image of the cities and even of the country.
