First 10kW-class helium cryocooler in China developed
2025-05-06

Researchers from the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, CAS, the Zhongshan Institute of Advanced Cryogenic Technology and other institutions have developed China's first 10,000-watt-class helium cryocooler, according to a Science and Technology Daily report on April 28.

In liquefaction mode, the cryocooler achieves a helium liquefaction rate of 3,370 liters per hour. It will be deployed in China's major national science and technology infrastructure project, the Accelerator Driven Transmutation Research Facility, to provide a cryogenic environment critical for nuclear waste treatment.

Core components of the machine, including the helium compressor, helium gas-bearing turboexpander, cryogenic heat exchanger and ultra-large high-vacuum insulated cold box, are all independently developed by China.

The machine made its debut at the Third China (Anhui) Science and Technology Innovation Achievement Transformation Fair. It has been transported to the Huizhou base of the Institute of Modern Physics, CAS to commence the second phase of technological development.
