At noon on August 16, the deep blast of a ship's horn echoed across the sky, bringing Hengmen Fishing Port on the Pearl River Estuary to life. Dozens of fishing boats weighed anchor and set sail, marking the start of a new fishing season and the end of the annual summer fishing moratorium.

The fishing season‑opening ceremony kicked off with a fish‑lantern parade, while a rousing lion dance sent the fishermen off with good cheer. Traditional customs followed, including the ceremonial cutting of roast pigs and the presentation of fishing flags. Nearly 50 stalls lined the port, where visitors browsed, sampled local fare and took photos.
This year's fishing festival featured a water sports meet, displays of traditional fishing skills, a retro night party at the port, a youth entrepreneurship market and interactive activities, drawing large crowds of visitors and residents.
