PolyU graduate finds calling in Zhongshan classroom
2026-09-04

At this year's graduation fashion show for the Class of 2024 in the Clothing Technology Department of Shaxi Vocational School in Zhongshan, children's wear modeled by young performers caught the eye with its distinctive local cultural flair.

The collection was guided by Chen Yanwei, a graduate of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Fourteen years ago, he came to Shaxi with a dream in fashion, and he has been teaching there ever since, helping students explore modern takes on Chinese stories through clothing design.

Chen, who has long been interested in revitalizing intangible cultural heritage, believes students should make the most of Zhongshan's cultural and industrial resources. "We should interpret traditional heritage in a design language that everyone can understand," he said, adding that designers should also draw emotionally resonant inspiration from culture.

Shaxi has a strong garment industry base, and Shaxi Vocational School's fashion program has maintained close ties with the local sector. Students not only learn professional knowledge on campus but also sharpen their skills through competitions and vocational contests, Chen said.
