2025-11-03

Urban renewal is breathing new life into some once-dormant industrial spaces in Zhongshan.

In the Can Art Garden in Nantou, the 9-meter-tall red cola can sculpture and cyberpunk neon strips have become viral photo spots.

This former factory site, silent for over 20 years, underwent a 120-million-yuan transformation in 2023 into an art complex integrating sightseeing, cultural and creative arts, B&Bs, dining, entertainment, and community-based office spaces. Since its opening in June, the Can Art Garden has attracted over 30 businesses, boosting local industries and increasing resident incomes.

Adhering to the "no tree cut, no memory lost" principle, the Qingyu Lifang, a creative park in Gangkou Town, was transformed from 1980s-90s factory dormitories into a hybrid media-education base and light culture-tourism retail hub, with dozens of old banyan trees well preserved.

Dongcheng Li, redeveloped from a 1990s factory and opened in June 2019, enhanced Da'aoxi Village's aesthetics and created business opportunities for nearly 100 vacant properties.

At dusk, the Zhongshan Porridge Factory in Gangkou Town buzzes with activity. Its curator, who rented this abandoned power plant together with his friends in 2023, documented the process of renovation on Douyin. "We are not just opening a simple restaurant. We are trying to preserve some urban memories," he says.
