A tamarind sapling from Sun Yat-sen's former residence in Zhongshan was planted at Armenian Park beside the Penang Sun Yat Sen Museum in Malaysia on July 4. It was the first overseas planting ceremony for a sapling cultivated by the Museum of Dr Sun Yat-sen in Zhongshan from the tamarind tree that Sun Yat-sen planted personally.

As the 160th anniversary of Sun Yat-sen's birth approaches, his great-grandniece Alexandra, also founder of the Sun Yat-Sen Cultural Foundation, brought the sapling to Malaysia, symbolizing the century-old China-Malaysia friendship and the enduring cultural heritage.
The parent tree is a nationally protected first-class ancient and renowned tree in China. In 1883, Sun Yat-sen, then a teenager, brought seeds from Hawaii and planted them in his hometown of Cuiheng Village.
In recent years, saplings from the parent tree have taken root at various Sun Yat-sen memorial sites, schools and parks across the country, serving as "green envoys" that carry forward historical culture and foster national pride.
During the Malaysia trip, the Sun Yat-Sen Cultural Foundation and the Museum of Dr Sun Yat-sen donated three saplings to the Sun Yat Sen Museum Penang, the Sun Yat-sen Centre, and the Sun Yat-sen Museum Perak in Ipoh.
