Parades held to celebrate 'Lunar April 8' festival

On the morning of May 5, also the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, the "Lunar April 8" drunken dragon parade took place as an activity of the 5th Zhongshan West District Drunken Dragon Beer & Music Carnival.

Joined by representative inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, the procession wound its way passing such cultural landmarks as the Huang Clan Ancestral Hall, Changzhou Community Committee, Qianzhou Ancestral Hall, Shishan Park and Houwang Temple, offering residents and visitors an immersive folk culture feast.


Abundant activities including riverside night markets, lion dance Competitions, drone shows, concerts and calligraphy and painting exhibitions were held concurrently.


In the evening, West District also hosted drunken dragon-themed banquets for aged residents at the Houwang Temple and under the Cuijing Bridge.


As a national-level intangible cultural heritage in West District, the Drunken Dragon Dance boasts a history of over 700 years.

On May 5, the Shaxi "Lunar April 8" folk art parade was held in Shengshi and Xiangjiao villages. The "Lunar April 8" folk culture events, traceable to the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, thrives in Shengshi and Xiangjiao villages of Shaxi Town. It is one of Zhongshan's most vibrant traditional celebrations, boasting the broadest community participation and most authentic expression of rural cultural heritage.
