Days before, a white-haired woman came to the Zhongshan Veterans Affairs Bureau and handed in a thank-you letter to the social workers who helped her with the application for the memorial medal marking the 70th anniversary of the Chinese People's Volunteers joining the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.
Liu Meide, originally from Xiaolan Town, Zhongshan, worked as a nurse in Dongsheng Hospital in 1950. In October 1951, she joined the wartime medical team. After completing her duties, Liu went to Hainan Island to contribute to national defense as a member of the first medical team in April 1952. She retired from Dongsheng Hospital in January 1991, and then settled down in Guangzhou.
In June last year, Liu learned from the news that China was going to issue medals to those who participated in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, so she immediately applied at her community in Guangzhou. However, there was a problem. "I joined the medical team and retired in Zhongshan, so there is no relevant archival data about me in Guangzhou." Liu said.
After learning this, social workers of the Zhongshan Veterans Affairs Bureau immediately contacted Dongsheng Hospital to find Liu's original records, and then helped her in applying for the medal.
A few months later, the medal was finally delivered to Liu. "This medal is more valuable than my life. I will cherish it and pass it down to later generations as my personal treasure," Liu added.
