The large scale opera Camellia composed by Shanghai Opera House was presented on the evening of Nov. 16 at the Grand Theater of Zhongshan Arts and Culture Center. Camellia is the masterpiece of Alexandre Dumasfils, a well-known French writer. Camellia tells about a tragic love story between a young man and a sociable upper class girl. The novel reveals through the tragic love story of a prostitute the corrupted life of the upper class of the July Dynasty of France. It criticizes the hypocritical morality of the aristocrat and bourgeoisie. It is the first time in French literature history to take a prostitute as the protagonist. The lineup and wonderful performance deeply touched the audience.
