For 20 years, athletes from Zhongshan have broken 17 world record and one Asian record, giving dazzling performance in national and international competitions.
I. In the 2006 World Weight-Lifting Championship, Qiu Hongxia, an athlete from Zhongshan, broke record in the clean & jerk of 53 kilograms, and won gold medals in snatch, clean & jerk, and total score.
II. In the 49th ISSF World Championship, Liu Zhongsheng, an athlete from Zhongshan, won silver medal in men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event. Liu, together with his teammates won the team champion of this event, winning the participation qualification for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
III. In November, 2001, Lu Yufu, an athlete from Zhongshan, lead the Guangdong Gymnastic Team to the team champion of men’s Gymnastic event in the 9th National Games.
IV. In November, 2001, Peng Shasha, an athlete from Zhongshan, won the gold medal in the event of women’s uneven bars.
In recent 20 years, Zhongshan witnessed the booming of sports, and built a series of sports facilities, which could meet even the international standard. In 2005, Zhongshan was awarded the title of “National Model City of Fitness Program”.
Fitness Plaza
People in Zhongshan demonstrate great enthusiasm for sports activities. For years, Changzhou Community has hosted the “Cuijing Culture Festival”, winning the honors of “National Advanced Community” and “National Advanced Community of Mass Exercises” in 2005. Huoju District set up sports funds and built a Fitness Plaza in 2003, winning various titles, such as “National Advanced Town of Rural Residents’ Fitness Activities” and “National Advanced Community of City Physical Exercises”. The city has perfect fitness networks and realized “four 100%” in 2007, meaning 100% of the towns have fitness plazas, 100% of the administrative villages have fitness centers, 100% of the communities have fitness stations and 100% of the fitness facilities are free to the public. Xiaolanghuan Park in the Sanxiang Town was dubbed “Top Fitness Station”. Xiaolan Town also saw the fast development of mass exercises, with the construction of 3 fitness plazas, 65 residents’ fitness stations, 10 multifunctional gymnasiums, 20 swimming pools and 431 basketball courts. It was honored as “National Advanced Town in Mass Exercise” in 1997.

Zhongshan has hosted important sports events like the 1st Women’s World Football Championship (Zhongshan Venue), the 12th Young Women’s World Handball Championship, National Table Tennis Championship, 14th World Chinese Invitational Badminton Tournament and Judo Game in the 9th National Games.
