To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ambassadorial-level diplomatic relations between China and the UK, CGTN Europe launched the second season of the media convergence show Bridge Builders, which tells the stories of people that have made outstanding contributions to the development of China-UK relations in the past half century. One of the episode interviewed Jerry Grey, an online influencer who has cycled around China and lived in Zhongshan for 18 years.
Born in the UK, Jerry Gray took notice of a recruitment advertisement for an English teacher in Zhongshan in 2004. He them came to Zhongshan and lived here for 18 years and even met his wife Ann Liang Yuhua.
Since 2005, Jerry and Ann have launched charity fund-raising activities to help resolve education-related problems for children in poverty-stricken areas of China. Since 2013, they have cycled over 35,000 kilometers around China.
In cooperation with government departments in Zhongshan, Jerry and Ann set up the Helping Hands Charity Fund with the theme of Riding for Love and promoted fund-raising along the way. At present, they have raised about 3 million yuan to support disabled people in Zhongshan.
"China is a marvelous and diverse country, but it is often misunderstood by opinionated westerners. I hope to bring them a new understanding of China," said Jerry, adding: "China's Poverty Alleviation Plan and Rural Revitalization strategy as well as infrastructure construction have brought incredible changes to all parts of the country. You must visit China in person to have a real understanding of this country today."
