A Brief Introduction to Zhongshan Societies

Yeng Wo Benevolent Association, one of the earliest Chinese societies in USA was founded in San Francisco in 1852 by Yuan Sheng from Zhongshan and members are immigrants from Zhongshan, Dongguan, Zengcheng and Boluo. It was founded for communication between overseas Chinese, welfare and business development, unification and cooperation and legal abidance. It subordinated 12 benevolent associations and 3 chambers of industry and commerce. 
UNITED CHINESE SOCIETY OF HAWAII, founded in 1884, became a charity organization after registered in Hawaii in 1928 and most of the chairmen and assistant chairmen were Zhongshan Chinese.  
CHINESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 0F HAWAII, founded in 1911, used to set up Minglun Middle School, the oldest overseas Chinese school in the 50 states of USA. Later it supported to build Hawaii Research Center for Chinese History with CHINESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 0F HAWAII and organized in 1950, Daffodil Festival which contributed a great deal to publicity of patriotism and Chinese culture. 
CHUNG SAN ASSOCIATI0N OF HAWAII, founded on May 20, 1950, was enthusiastic for public welfare, charities and mutual help and support and took Chinese traditional filial piety as a motto. A member conference should be held once every year. 
BUCK TOY CLUB, founded in 1885 developed from Buck Toy Association and was renamed as what it is now in 1915. And the club moved to a new address in 1957. It took charity, cooperation and friendship as their motto. 
LUNGDOO BENEVOIJENT SOCIETY, founded in 1891, had over 10,000 members in 1990. This society owned a property and played an active role in charities of Spring Festival feast, Donation for the aged, public welfare in hometown, educational support, etc. 
OO Syak Gee Lu Society in Honolulu was founded in 1897 by Zheng Yiliang who built a hotel to accommodate people came from hometown. It had lets and provided a fund for activities. 
DUCK DOO SOCIETY, founded in 1906, later renamed as DUCK DOO ASSOCIATION was registered in July 1936 and it took social welfare and charities as their motto. 
SEE DAIDOO SOCIETY, founded in 1906, took charities, communication and mutual help as their motto. It built a 13-storeyed building as the new address, of which local Chinese felt proud. 
ON TONG TUNG HEONG SOCIETY with the office address, founded in 1926, registered in 1937, had over 200 members. 
YOUNG ASSOCIATION, founded in 1952, took communication and welfare promotion as their motto. and members were from Yang Families of Zhongshan. 
CHINESE COMMUNITY SERVICE ASSOCIATION, founded in 1977, offered enthusiastic services to local overseas Chinese and took mutual help, re-knowing of PRC and promotion of Sino-American friendship as their motto. 
HA CHEK SOCIETY, was founded with left money of village school building in August 1977. Chen Kuan, an overseas Chinese merchant donated a large amount of money to build village schools and other overseas Chinese helped to collect money. 
CHING CLAN BENEVOILENT SOCIETY, was founded in March 1949 and its members came from Cheng Families. 
Shon Yee Benevolent Association of Canada Convention, founded on May 9, 1915, was one of the main overseas Chinese associations. 
CHUNG SHAN ASSOCIATION DE MEXICALI, founded in Mexicali, Mexico in 1915, was an important overseas Chinese association in Mexicali. It was first called Tongshan Association and renamed as Xiangshan Association in 1918. When Sun Yat-sen died in 1925, Xiangshan was renamed as Zhongshan and later Xiangshan Association was renamed as Zhongshan Association. 
Zhongshan (Panama) Chinese Association had a history of over 100 years and developed from Xiangshan Society. It was renamed as Zhongshan (Panama) Chinese Association on Nov. 12, 1985. 
ASSOCIATION LUNG SING SEA, founded in 1908, took motherland and homeland concern, mutual help and support and social welfare and charities as their motto. 
Tongsheng Society of LIMA, also called Hakka Society with a history of over 100 years, was a member of Sociedad Central de la Beneficencia China. The Hakka people intended to build a society in 1889 and not until 1891 did they collect 20,000 Yuan to purchase a large house and founded the society for unification of compatriots and welfare promotion. Most of Hakka people of Zhongshan would stay there when they first went to Peru. 
CHUNG SHAN SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA, Founded was founded for mutual help and common profits in July 1982. 
QUEENSLAND CHUNG SHAN SOCIETY, was founded for communication of townsmen, promotion of welfare, development of local economy and construction of hometown. 
AUCKLAND ZHONG SHAN CLAN ASSOCIATION, was founded in Auckland in December 1984 and had over 200 members. It took communication of overseas Chinese, seeking the root and helping new immigrants as their motto. It would organize activities at Spring Festival, Mid-Autumn Day and Founding Day. It often organized groups to visit Zhongshan and maintained a close connection with some organizations in Zhongshan. 
THE FEDERATION OF CHUNG SHAN ASSOCIATION, was founded in 1954 for friendship and common profits. 
N.S.ChungShun Clansman Persatuan, was not declared its foundation until 1952. It set up Pioneers Mourning Grave and organized a party during the Spring Mourning and Autumn Mourning. 
CHUNG SHAN WUI KOON, founded in 1821, had four subordinate branches including Lanzhen Association, Longzhen Association, Haizhou Association and Caobu Association. 
PHILIPPINE CHUNG SHAN FEDERAL ASSOCIATION, founded in Tongzhi Period of Qing Dynasty was reopened in 1948 after stop in the Second World War. It had its office building, the nursing home and hotels and set up the education aiding fund. It made Nov. 12 the founding day, on which Sun Yat-sen was born.
