In the warm spring breeze, the love-showing activity is held in Xinzhong Avenue again. This activity has become a festival of the city and has moved the city for twenty-three years. From the Respecting-the-Aged Parade in 1988 to the Charity Parade nowadays, from a group of people to the whole city, Zhongshan is composing a love chapter by inheriting, delivering and spreading fraternity.
Fraternity connotes insistence. In 1988, a Respecting-the-Aged Parade was held to raise money for the elderly. It is out of expectation that this activity would be held consecutively in the following twenty-three years with funds donated mounting from 72,000 yuan in 1988 to 76,680,000 yuan in 2010. These figures reflect fraternity and insistence of Zhongshan people. After so many years, Charity Parade has become a new convention and the name card of Zhongshan’s city spirit. Fraternity is the core of the spirit of Charity Parade as well as of Zhongshan, the city naming after the great forerunner Dr. Sun Yat-sen.
Fraternity needs to be handed down to be alive. Zhongshan people make it. Since 1988, charity has been implanted in the hearts of Zhongshan people, and been displayed in their volunteer activities. For twenty-three years, the donations top over 1 million every year. This year, the parade routes were shortened, but the attendees expanded. Under the banner of fraternity, more and more people join the parade to illustrate the city’s spirit.
Fraternity is spreading. The 23-year-long activity has been attracting more and more attention. Besides people from Zhongshan, Macau, Hong Kong, and overseas, charity associations from Beijing, Shanghai and other places and a dozen of media at home and abroad also came to the scene of the activity. In 2008, Zhongshan Charity Parade won “the Most Influential Charity Project of 2008 China Charity Awards”, the top governmental award in public charity, which marked Charity Parade a feast at home and abroad.
The benevolent activity has been handed down, featuring charity, fraternity and harmony. With the development of Zhongshan, Charity Parade has become the spirit, the brand, the label, and the name card of the city.
People’s activities evolve into a culture when they become an indispensable part of people’s life. After 23-year enrichment and perfection, Charity Parade has not only become the name card of Zhongshan, but also an indentified value, a spirit pursuit of Zhognshan people in the new term, and is spreading toward surrounding cities.
