Typhoon Morakot, the most devastating typhoon in half a century, wreaked havoc across central and southern Taiwan on Aug 8 and left Taiwan compatriots suffering serious life and property loss.
After learning the disaster from the media, people in Zhongshan quickly swung into action of rescue and relief.
Zhongshan has long been enjoying a special humanity, geological and economic link with Taiwan, said deputy director of the Municipal Taiwan Affairs Bureau Lu Wenwei. In recent years, there are about 100 thousand Taiwanese coming to Zhongshan and over 15 thousand permanently residing in Zhongshan.
To aid the typhoon-affected people in Taiwan, Zhongshan has drawn 200 thousand yuan from the disaster relief reserve fund raised by the annual Charity Parade. On Aug 13, the municipal Red Cross Society appealed to people to donate for victims of Typhoon Morakot.
