The Ministry of Ecology and Environment recently reported on the national surface water and ambient air quality from January to December 2021. The comprehensive air quality in Zhongshan ranked 14th among 168 key cities nationwide during this period.

Zhongshan's comprehensive air quality index (AQI) was 3.01 in 2021, with an AQI compliance rate of 89.9% and all six indexes meeting standards in 2021. Zhongshan's comprehensive AQI ranked 4th in the Pearl River Delta region.

Zhongshan stepped up pollution control in 2021 through continuously promoting comprehensive treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and treating pollution from industrial furnaces and boilers as well as through vigorous prevention and control of non-static pollution sources. The construction of collective industrial parks has also been promoted, with five parks already completed and seven currently under construction.

In addition, Zhongshan has also strengthened scientific and technological support for atmospheric environmental management decision-making and supervision, such as using drones to capture data from 76.2 square kilometers to generate pollution maps in key areas.
