Zhongshan was selected as a national model city of sponge city construction for 2022 in the recently-conducted competitive review and became the only one in Guangdong Province made themodel citylist.

In the process of promoting sponge city construction, Zhongshan has established a number of sponge city construction projects, such as the Cuiheng Wetland Park. Up to now, more than 26.2% of the built-up areas in Zhongshan meet the requirements of sponge city construction.

In the next three years, Zhongshan will invest 4.7 billion yuan, including 900 million yuan subsidized by the central government, to build a sponge city with high flexibility against rain and clean water and rivers.

A sponge city refers to a city that is as resilient as a sponge in adapting to environmental changes and coping with natural disasters caused by rain.
