Zhongshan is a national historical and cultural city. It used to be named Xiangshan, a county established in the 22nd year of the Shaoxing period of the Southern Song Dynasty (the year 1152). It is the birthplace of a number of great and talented persons, including the great democratic visionary Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and pioneers such as Zheng Guanying, Ma Yingbiao, Yang Xianyi and Yang Yin, as well as contemporary celebrities such as Huang Miaozi, Fang Cheng and Li Haiying. They shone brightly in modern Chinese history.

Zhongshan is also a famous hometown of overseas Chinese in Guangdong Province. People from the city migrated overseas early in the Southern Song Dynasty. Now about 1 million Zhongshanese people live in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as well as in nearly 100 countries and regions around the world. They have brought from around the world ideas and technological, historical, cultural information, as well as capital, technology, talent and advanced management experience, and have become an important force in driving development of their hometown.

Influenced by the Western architectural style, overseas-Chinese buildings, including arcades, watchtowers and dwellings, best epitomize the overseas-Chinese culture in Zhongshan. Differing in forms and styles, mainly distributed in towns and districts such as Torch Development Zone, South District, Shiqi District and Nanlang District, these buildings manifest not only Zhongshan's rich cultural resources, but also its century-long overseas-Chinese history.

In recent years, Zhongshan has issued a bimonthly periodical - Zhongshan Overseas Chinese Journal in Chinese and English to deliver latest hometown news to overseas Zhongshanese people and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan compatriots, and it has become a "collective home letter" linking Zhongshanese people at home and abroad. You can download the previous issues of the journal from the website "Tongxin Zhongshan" (click the menu bar "Useful Websites" of HiZhongshan) or read online through the "Zhongshan Overseas Chinese Journal" WeChat account.
