Cai Chang has three brothers, and he ranked the third. Due to the poor family conditions, when he was 14 years old he said goodbye to his parents. Together with his elder brother Cai Xin, he boarded the ship and left for Australia to sell fruits and so Cai Xin began his early business career. When he first arrived in Sydney Australia, he was a helper in Wing On Fruit Shop run by his brother Cai Xin and Ma Yingbiao. Later he opened a shop of his own and accumulated some money to run a department store. In 1899 Cai Xin went back to Hong Kong with his savings, and the next year at the invitation of Ma Yingbiao Cai Xin established Xian Shi Department Store. Before long, Cai Chang also backed to Hong Kong and worked in Xian Shi Department Store, and began to accumulate administrative experience bit by bit, so as to build a foundation for his future career.

In the spring of 1912, Cai Chang and his brother raised 4 million Hong Kong dollars and started his own company---Da Xin Department Store and he was the manager. From then on he began to run business in China independently. When he stood firm in Hong Kong, he started a chain store in Hui Ai Middle Road in Guang Zhou in 1916. Two years later, the grand Da Xin Building with 12 floors was built, which is now called Southern Building. The success of Da Xin Company in Hong Kong and Guangzhou made him famous. In 1934 he raised 6 million Hong Kong dollars to build a department store at the intersection between Nanjing Road and Tibet Road in Shanghai where thousands of businessmen gathered. The building was spectacular and was the largest in China, and one of the few great department stores in East Asia. On January 10, 1936 the Shanghai Da Xin Building was completely constructed. It has surpassed Xian Shi, Wing On and Xin Xin and became the top of the “Four Big Department Stores”. Cai Chang and the Da Xin Company he ran in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong have all gained world renown. The company occupied an important position in the department business all over the country.
